Violinist James Ehnes & Schubert's Final Symphony - Starts at 10:45AM
2h 13m
The DSO welcomes one of today’s most skillful violinists, James Ehnes, to Orchestra Hall. Ehnes performs Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, a showpiece which only the most accomplished musicians tackle. The concerto’s memorable opening melody would not let Mendelssohn rest until he had committed it to paper. Led by guest conductor Juanjo Mena, these concerts begin with Haydn’s “Trauer” Symphony, with a lush third movement the composer asked to have played at his funeral. Closing the program is Schubert’s “The Great,” nearly lost after the composer’s death until Schumann retrieved the unpublished manuscript and shined a light on its genius.
